Kaptur's office confirmed she is "active, alert, and being treated for non-life-threatening injuries." The office stated she was on her way to church at the time of the crash. Toledo police responded to a two-vehicle collision shortly before 11 a.m. local time. Authorities are investigating the incident as a hit-and-run, also known as a "hit-skip" incident.

Kaptur, a Democrat, has represented Ohio's ninth congressional district for 43 years. She is the longest-serving female lawmaker in the history of the US House of Representatives. She is currently campaigning for re-election against Republican Derek Merrin. Her district encompasses parts of Toledo and extends across northwestern Ohio along the southern shore of Lake Erie.
