US reviews military presence in Europe

The United States has initiated a review of its military presence in Europe, signaling a potential shift in defense responsibilities. The Pentagon announced the review, stating its objective is to expedite NATO's move towards a more robust European-led conventional defense. This initiative aligns with recent discussions among NATO defense ministers, aiming to foster a more sustainable and equitable alliance. U.S. officials have previously expressed dissatisfaction with some European allies concerning their contributions to collective security and the utilization of NATO bases. The review is expected to accelerate the transition, ensuring NATO can respond rapidly and decisively to threats. The U.S. has previously warned of potential reductions in its contributions if allies do not meet agreed-upon defense spending targets, such as allocating at least 5% of their GDP to security by 2035.
