US sanctions 13 over Iran IRGC missile procurement network

The United States has imposed sanctions on thirteen individuals and entities accused of attempting to procure weapons systems for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The sanctioned parties, operating from Iran, Belarus, China, and Hong Kong, reportedly sought to acquire a range of weapons, including man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS).

State Department spokesperson Tommy Piggot announced the sanctions on Wednesday, stating they align with the President's National Security Presidential Memorandum Two. "The United States is committed to disrupting procurement efforts supporting Iran's military programs," Piggot said. "This action represents the commitment to stop Iran from engaging in activities related to the reconstitution of its proliferation-sensitive programs."

Among the sanctioned entities are the Belarus-based Armory Alliance, described as a middleman for China and Iran in purchasing MANPADS, and Iran's Center for Innovation and Technological Cooperation (CITC), a government entity involved in acquiring satellite imagery and intelligence for Iranian strikes. Individuals named include Mohammadmahdi Maleki, an Iranian employed by Armory Alliance, and Sajjad Ahadzadeh, head of CITC, who allegedly facilitated the procurement of weapons and materials for the IRGC.

These designations are part of "Operation Economic Fury," an initiative by the Treasury Department designed to pressure Iran by restricting its access to funds and degrading its military capabilities. The operation aims to curb Iran's ability to advance its military objectives and compel the regime to cease clandestine actions through underground banking networks.
