US Sanctions Chinese, Hong Kong Shippers Over Alleged Iranian Oil Transport

The United States has imposed sanctions on a group of Chinese and Hong Kong shipping companies, accusing them of facilitating Iran's oil exports and operating as part of Tehran's "shadow fleet." The U.S. State Department identified eight companies whose vessels allegedly transported Iranian crude oil and petrochemical products to China and the United Arab Emirates, thereby helping Iran circumvent international economic pressure. According to the U.S. Treasury Department, six of the named vessels are specifically accused of transporting millions of barrels of Iranian crude oil between 2026 and the present. U.S. officials stated that these sanctions are designed to cut off a vital source of revenue for the Iranian regime, which is reportedly facing severe economic challenges. The sanctions also target two Iranian companies accused of forcing commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz to purchase maritime insurance, a measure intended to mitigate risks associated with Tehran's alleged ship seizures. The targeted companies include Qi Hang Ship Management Limited, based in China, and Confident Apex Limited, based in Hong Kong. The sanctions will freeze assets within U.S. jurisdiction and prohibit transactions with U.S. individuals and entities. Foreign financial institutions engaging with these sanctioned companies also face the risk of secondary sanctions. The U.S. emphasizes its commitment to working with allies to isolate Tehran until it ceases its destabilizing activities.
