The Washington Post reported that a former girlfriend testified that Platner repeatedly removed condoms during sex without her consent. Platner has vehemently denied these accusations. In a video posted on the platform X, he described the allegations as "disturbing, serious, and false."

His withdrawal leaves the Republican party without a challenger against Collins in a state where Democrats had hoped to make gains. The outcome of this race is seen as potentially influential in the broader battle for control of the US Senate.
