US senators seek permanent ban on sales of internet-connected Chinese cars

Chinese cars are becoming a political issue in North America, where lawmakers and other critics are presenting them as more than an export product. Two US senators, Bernie Moreno and Elissa Slotkin, have introduced a bill that would permanently ban the sale of internet-connected vehicles from China.

The proposal targets vehicles linked to the internet, rather than all Chinese cars in general. Its supporters argue that connected vehicles could create a serious security risk. The concern, according to the report, is shared by some politicians, representatives of the automotive industry, and members of the military and intelligence services.

The initiative comes as Chinese vehicles have expanded across much of the world, while North America remains an exception. In the United States, the question has therefore moved into the political arena, with the proposed ban seeking a permanent restriction on sales.
