US slaps 50% tariff on Canadian goods in escalating trade dispute

The United States has escalated its trade dispute with Canada by imposing a 50% tariff on a broad array of Canadian products. The White House announced that President Donald Trump signed the measure on Monday, citing Canada's "discriminatory treatment" of American autos, alcohol, and dairy products.

The new tariffs, which will take effect on August 19, are based on a nearly century-old trade law from 1930. Products affected include wine, hockey sticks, cement, furniture, and clothing, according to the US government. However, energy and goods already subject to other industry-specific tariffs are exempt.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that Canada continues to retaliate against the United States, unlike other partners and allies. This move further strains relations between Washington D.C. and Ottawa, coming just days after Trump threatened new tariffs over air pollution caused by wildfires in Canada.

Trump had previously complained on social media that the costs incurred by the US due to the smoke must "inevitably" be added to existing tariffs on Canadian imports. He also stated he would call Prime Minister Mark Carney to inquire about actions taken against the air pollution, which he attributed to Canada's alleged failure to properly manage its forests and underbrush.
