US Slaps Up to 100% Tariffs on Imported Drones to Spur Domestic Production

The United States is significantly increasing the cost of imported drones, with President Donald Trump signing an executive proclamation that establishes new ad valorem tariffs of up to 100%. This measure targets unmanned aircraft systems and their essential components, aiming to bolster national security and protect critical infrastructure by reducing the nation's substantial dependence on foreign manufacturers.

The Commerce Department's report, cited as justification for the tariffs, highlighted the strategic vulnerability posed by the significant market penetration of foreign-made drones. The increasing role of unmanned technology in contemporary conflicts, where it has redefined tactical doctrines and hybrid warfare, further underscores the administration's concerns.

The tariff structure is segmented. Drones with a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 25 kilograms, those equipped with thermal imaging sensors, docking stations, and critical electronic components will face the full 100% tariff. Smaller drones lacking sensitive security features will be subject to a 25% tariff.

Preferential rates are available for allied countries. Drones from the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Liechtenstein will face a 15% tariff, while those from the United Kingdom will incur a 10% tariff, provided their hardware, software, and technology originate from those jurisdictions or the U.S. The new tariffs are set to take effect generally on September 3, with some components having up to 180 days for application. The Commerce Department is also empowered to create incentive programs for tech companies investing in U.S.-based assembly and innovation facilities.
