US Strike Hits Tanker in Gulf of Oman; Three Indian Sailors Missing

Three Indian sailors are missing following a U.S. military strike on an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, according to reports. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that an aircraft fired "precision munitions" into the engine room of the Palau-flagged vessel, the Settebello.

CENTCOM asserted that the tanker's crew repeatedly failed to comply with instructions from U.S. forces and did not respect the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military has been enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports since Tehran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas supplies, which normally sees one-fifth of the world's trade pass through it.

The Indian government confirmed the disappearance of three sailors and the rescue of 21 other Indian crew members. New Delhi issued a strong statement, declaring, "The targeting of commercial ships and civilian infrastructure in the region must cease." Since the blockade began on April 13, U.S. forces have disabled eight ships and diverted 134 others.

This incident occurs amidst heightened tensions in the region, with the U.S. military's actions aimed at countering perceived threats and enforcing maritime security. The involvement of Indian nationals on the targeted vessel underscores the international implications of such military actions in vital shipping lanes.
