US Strikes Iranian Missile Sites, Tehran Attacks American Bases in Jordan

Iran has launched a missile strike on American military facilities in Jordan, saying it was retaliation for a U.S. attack on Iranian missile installations on Larac Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian media, citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said the missiles targeted the American bases King Hussein and Al-Azraq. The IRGC claimed the strike caused “serious damage.” Iranian media also reported deaths and injuries, but did not provide an exact toll.

Jordan confirmed the attack. The state agency Petra said the country's air defenses intercepted eight missiles that entered Jordanian airspace.

The United States had earlier confirmed strikes on Iranian missile launchers on Larac Island. Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, said American forces had detected IRGC preparations to launch missiles and deploy naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The island lies near Iran's coast and the port of Bandar Abbas, in a strategically important part of the waterway.

The strikes are described as the first known U.S. attacks on Iran since late July, when President Donald Trump suspended military operations against Tehran. Iran has previously threatened to restrict shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil and liquefied natural gas trade. Tehran rejected Trump's claim that all Iranian mines in the strait had been destroyed or removed, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi calling the statements “propaganda.”

The latest confrontation follows a new package of U.S. sanctions against Iran and its partners announced on Aug. 24.
