US Supreme Court allows Trump ballroom construction to continue

Construction of President Donald Trump’s planned White House ballroom can continue even though court challenges to the project are still unresolved.

The US Supreme Court rejected a request from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which had sought to stop the work. The decision came by a narrow 5-4 majority. Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court’s three liberal justices in dissent, while the majority concluded that the preservation group likely lacked the legal standing to challenge the project.

The ruling does not settle whether the ballroom project itself is lawful. That question returns to lower courts. Because construction can proceed meanwhile, a later ruling could struggle to reverse changes already made at the site.

Unfounded

Trump celebrated the decision on Truth Social and called the lawsuit “unfounded.” He wrote, “When it is completed in the summer of 2028, the magnificent ballroom and military complex will be something the whole country will be very proud of.”

Court documents describe a construction schedule of 20 hours a day at the White House site. The project covers more than 8,400 square meters. Workers aim to complete the ballroom’s structural frame in November and its facade in April.
