US tech giants build massive gas-fired power plants to fuel AI

US tech giants are rapidly expanding their electricity generation capacity to meet the immense power demands of artificial intelligence. By 2030, these companies aim to construct over 90 gigawatts of new capacity, a figure that dwarfs current energy production. This expansion is largely driven by the need to power energy-hungry AI systems.

The chosen energy source for these new facilities is predominantly natural gas, which will account for approximately 75% of the new capacity. This reliance on fossil fuels raises environmental concerns, as natural gas is a significant emitter of greenhouse gases. The move comes as the US government has expedited the permitting process for these construction projects.

This surge in energy demand is transforming the US electricity landscape. Data centers, the backbone of AI operations, are projected to consume between 10% and 15% of the nation's total electricity by 2030, a substantial increase from the current 5%. This escalating demand necessitates massive infrastructure development, with tech companies increasingly opting to build their own power sources rather than relying solely on the existing grid.
