US threatens sanctions on countries trading with Iran

The United States is intensifying its pressure on Iran by threatening sanctions against any country or company that continues to engage in trade with the Islamic Republic. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared that the goal is to "cut off every economic lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime, until Tehran stands completely alone."

Bessent announced that a deadline has been established for these entities to terminate their commercial ties with Iran. Failure to comply will result in sanctions imposed by Washington. The U.S. Treasury Department has reportedly mapped out the networks, actors, and financial channels that Iran utilizes to smuggle oil and circumvent existing sanctions. Consequently, sanctions are being implemented against 60 Iranian-linked entities, individuals, and vessels.

Countries such as Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, China, and Switzerland were mentioned in connection with these trade activities. The U.S. also plans to halt general licenses that previously permitted certain transfers to Iran, a clause that was part of a memorandum of understanding allowing Iran to export its crude oil after its signing.

While specific Chinese companies were not named, Bessent asserted that "No one is exempt. Every country, every business can expect sanctions. Any form of economic complicity will expose those responsible to the full potential of American power." He indicated that a concrete penalty for those aiding Iran in "money laundering" could be exclusion from the U.S. dollar system. Bessent did not provide specific timelines but stated that the U.S. "does not have much patience."
