US to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian goods; key sectors exempt

The United States is preparing to implement significant new tariffs, imposing a 50% duty on a variety of Canadian products. This move, announced by US President Donald Trump via executive order, is framed as a response to Canada's alleged "discriminatory treatment of American products," specifically citing trade disputes over dairy, alcohol, and automotive goods.

These new tariffs are scheduled to take effect in one month and will affect a diverse range of items, including wine, hockey sticks, and cement. Notably, products entering the US under the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) will also be subject to these increased duties. However, certain essential sectors, such as energy, fishing products, and critical minerals, will be exempt from the new measures.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his readiness to intensify discussions with the US. He also alluded to the possibility of Canada taking "equivalent measures," suggesting a potential retaliatory response if diplomatic efforts fail to resolve the trade friction. The situation indicates a deepening trade conflict between the two neighboring countries.
