His announcement follows a previous threat by President Donald Trump regarding "economic war" and consequences for any nation providing aid to Iran.

Speaking to CNBC, Bessent elaborated that further details would be revealed at a press conference, stating, "We will talk about what exactly we are going to do to Iran." He characterized the impending actions as a "double whammy," combining a blockade with unprecedented sanctions. "This will work. We will bring down that regime," Bessent declared, urging allies and the international community to align with the U.S. position, framing it as a binary choice: "You are either with us or against us."

When questioned about potential U.S. actions against China for its business dealings with Iran, Bessent suggested that such discussions are best held privately. He noted Iran's significant reliance on the Gulf for energy, implying that China has a strong incentive to engage with the U.S. program. Iran has been subject to nearly continuous economic sanctions for almost 50 years, dating back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
