US to Revoke Tourist Visas for Peruvians Who Seek Asylum

The Trump administration is preparing to implement a significant immigration restriction that could affect up to 200,000 individuals, including Peruvians, by revoking tourist and business visas. The State Department argues that using a visitor visa with the intention of seeking asylum constitutes a violation of the visa's conditions. "Obtaining a visa with the intention of seeking asylum constitutes fraud and is grounds for revocation," stated Tommy Pigott, a spokesperson for the State Department. This move is part of a broader immigration offensive by the administration aimed at tightening controls on entry and stay within the U.S.

The measure will involve a review of B1 and B2 visas issued between 2016 and 2026. While the process will be gradual and the exact number of affected individuals may vary, the policy signals a stricter approach to immigration. The State Department has also temporarily suspended appointments for immigrant visas at its embassies and consulates worldwide to train consular staff on new procedures for determining if applicants might become a public charge.
