USA's UC Irvine coach enjoys Jones Cup, Taiwanese night market snacks

The UC Irvine basketball team from the United States has advanced to the Jones Cup finals with an undefeated record, securing a decisive 96-71 victory over Taiwan Blue in the semifinals. The team showcased a dominant performance, with four players scoring in double figures and hitting 14 three-pointers, while outrebounding their opponents 54-35. Head coach Russell Turner expressed his honor at participating in the Jones Cup, highlighting his team's defensive intensity and rebounding as key factors in their success. "I think my team showed tonight our respect for this tournament with our defense and our rebounding," Turner stated. He also acknowledged Taiwan Blue's competitive spirit, particularly during stretches in the first half where they mounted a strong challenge. Beyond the competition, the UC Irvine team engaged in community service activities and explored Taipei during their off days. Many players experienced Taiwan for the first time, immersing themselves in the local culture. Coach Turner shared his personal enjoyment of the experience, noting a visit to Taipei 101, a trip to the mountains for Oolong tea, and a memorable exploration of the night markets. Turner specifically mentioned his fondness for Taiwanese night market snacks, particularly the pepper bun. "The food was really great, I really liked the pepper buns," he said. The team's excursions provided a valuable opportunity for cultural immersion and a chance to recharge before the championship game.
