These rules, applicable across Florida and the rest of the country, emphasize the importance of maintaining a valid green card to prove legal status and avoid potential complications.

Beyond the expiration of a green card, USCIS mandates replacement in several other scenarios. These include situations where the card is lost, stolen, damaged, contains incorrect information, or was never received by the holder. It is crucial for permanent residents aged 18 and older to carry their valid green card at all times as proof of their immigration status.

For conditional permanent residents, the process differs. Those with conditional residency due to marriage must file Form I-751 to remove conditions, while certain investors use Form I-829. However, Form I-90 can still be used to replace a lost, stolen, damaged, or incorrect conditional card, or one that was never received.

To apply for a replacement green card in 2026, individuals in Florida must submit Form I-90 to USCIS. The agency recommends the online application process for its efficiency in tracking case status and receiving notifications. The fee for online submissions is $470, while paper applications cost $520. Some applicants may be eligible for a fee waiver. Failure to renew a green card on time can create significant hurdles when re-entering the U.S. after international travel, starting new employment, or completing other official procedures.
