UTMB: French runner Blandine L'Hirondel wins elite trail race in under 22 hours

Blandine L'Hirondel has etched her name in the history books, becoming the first French woman in ten years to win the prestigious Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB). The 35-year-old runner from Normandy crossed the finish line in Chamonix with a time of 21 hours, 54 minutes, and 49 seconds, conquering the demanding 174-kilometer course with its 10,000 meters of positive elevation gain.

Her victory was hard-fought, marked by moments of tension for her supporters. L'Hirondel experienced two falls in the final hours of the race, a testament to the extreme physical and mental toll of such an endurance event. However, her substantial lead over the chasing pack meant these incidents did not jeopardize her commanding position.

After more than 20 hours of relentless effort through the Alps, L'Hirondel's triumph was met with euphoria from the crowds lining the course and in Chamonix's Triangle de l'Amitié square. She celebrated by carrying the French flag, a symbol of her monumental achievement.

This victory marks a significant milestone for L'Hirondel, who had previously finished on the podium in 2023. Despite battling an injury to her left leg, she delivered a performance described as "monumental" and "epic," solidifying her status as a champion in the world of ultra-endurance trail running.
