Uzodimma Defeats Okorocha in Imo APC Senatorial Primary

In a decisive victory, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has secured the Imo West Senatorial District ticket for the All Progressives Congress (APC), trouncing former Governor Rochas Okorocha in the party’s primary election. The governor garnered an overwhelming 230,464 votes, leaving Okorocha with 1,098 votes in the Option A4 primary held across the zone's 12 local government areas.

Voting was conducted across the 305 wards LGAs of the State. While LGA collation of results have also concluded across most LGAs, Returning Officers across the three Senatorial Districts are currently in the process of collating the results at the various Senatorial District Collation centres.

The primary, overseen by the National Assembly APC Primary Election Committee Chairman, Rear Admiral Williams Kayode (retd.), saw Uzodimma sweep all LGAs. This outcome reflects the current political dynamics within Imo State, where Governor Uzodimma has consolidated his influence within the APC structure.

It is noteworthy that many of the Senatorial aspirants had heeded the advice and pleas of the Leader of the Party, His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, CON, by withdrawing from the race just before the voting commenced. These party members who withdrew from the race, without any form of compulsion or intimidation, are the real winners and heroes of this contest, as they made the election easier, smoother ad strengthened our party’s unity. As a party, we shall not take their selfless sacrifices for granted.

While some aspirants in the Imo North and Imo East senatorial districts opted for consensus candidates, Okorocha’s decision to contest against the incumbent governor highlighted a persistent political rivalry. The APC, through its Publicity Secretary Onwuasoanya Jones, lauded the unity shown by aspirants who withdrew from the race, calling them “the real winners and heroes of this contest” for strengthening party unity. The party also acknowledged the courage of those who participated in the election.
