Valjevo Prosecutor's Office Prosecutes 28 for Protest Violence

The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Valjevo is pursuing legal action against 28 individuals accused of violent conduct during a protest held on August 16 of the previous year. The office has also submitted a request to initiate preparatory proceedings against three minors in connection with the same event.

According to the prosecutor's office, the proceedings against the 28 adults are currently in the evidence-gathering phase. For the three minors, preparatory proceedings are underway before a juvenile judge at the Higher Court in Valjevo.

This action stems from a large protest that took place in Valjevo on August 16, 2025. Citizens from across Serbia gathered to express dissatisfaction with the police's handling of demonstrators two days prior. The protest escalated into riots and street clashes, with masked individuals vandalizing the premises of the Serbian Progressive Party and the local government and prosecutor's office buildings. Police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, and the Gendarmerie was deployed to the streets.

Following the protest, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that 15 people were detained for violent conduct at a public gathering, while 13 others received misdemeanor charges. Separately, the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed it was conducting three separate proceedings against a total of 34 individuals for attacking police officers on August 14, 2025, in Valjevo.
