Van Lang University removes barriers blocking newly opened Xuyên Tâm canal road

Residents can now use the newly opened road along Xuyên Tâm canal after Van Lang University removed barriers that had blocked traffic near its entrance.

The section in An Nhơn ward, Ho Chi Minh City, opened on Sept. 2. But barriers appeared at several points near the university, and security guards stopped people from passing. Some residents had to ask guards to open a route, while others were told to take a detour because the road had not yet been formally handed over.

An Nhơn ward authorities said the road had been built with public funds and therefore residents had the right to travel on it. They told the university that putting up barriers to stop public traffic was improper and should not happen again. By midday on Sept. 3, the school’s security team had removed the barriers, restoring normal movement through the area.

The university said it supports opening the road because it improves local transport, the urban landscape and the surrounding living environment. It said vehicle numbers rose quickly on the first day, while traffic arrangements outside the gate were still unfinished. The temporary barriers, it said, were intended to protect students, staff, lecturers and residents at the crossing.

After local officials explained the traffic plan, the university dismantled the barriers and worked with authorities to reopen the route. It said it would monitor traffic, seek safer arrangements around the school gate and parking entrance, increase security during peak hours, guide students into the correct lanes and help limit local congestion. The university also called for continued coordination to complete road signs and related infrastructure.
