Vanished Without a Trace: What Happened to Peter Engström?

For over 30 years, Peter Engström has been missing, vanishing as if swallowed by the earth. Police have no leads, and his family remains without answers regarding what happened on the morning of June 19, 1995, in Stockholm.

Engström, 33, arrived at Arlanda airport at 8:30 a.m. and called his partner in Boden five minutes later, reporting that everything was fine and he was heading to Svea Court of Appeal for a hearing scheduled at 9:30 a.m. However, he never arrived, disappearing somewhere between the airport and central Stockholm.

His brother, Mikael Garding, expressed the family's enduring pain. "It's been so long, but of course, you want to know what happened. Above all, you want answers for Mom's sake. This has been very difficult for her. She thought he would come back," he said, recalling years of keeping Christmas presents under the tree for him.

As a child, he wasn't troublesome, but I thought he was lazy. He always wanted to take the easy way out, and that was to become criminal.

Engström had a history of involvement in crime, with periods of apparent wealth alternating with hardship. His brother described him as taking the "easy way out" through criminal activity, leading to frequent incarcerations. In the mid-1990s, amidst high inflation, Engström became involved in fraud schemes. In 1994, he was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in a ring that stole and resold expensive boats, including a luxury cruiser valued at three million kronor. He disappeared before his appeal hearing.

Cathrine Löfgren, lead investigator for the police's cold case unit handling Engström's case, acknowledged that various theories are being considered.

He went in and out of prison, and we argued fiercely about it. I was furious with him and thought his life choices were completely screwed up.
