Varaždin coach anticipates tough Conference League clash with Jablonec

Varaždin is set to face Czech side Jablonec in their opening European fixture of the season, the second qualifying round of the Conference League. Head coach Nikola Šafarić acknowledged the opponent's strength, stating, "We are facing a demanding match, a very good opponent whom we respect." He added that both teams possess similar quality, and the outcome will likely hinge on "mistakes." Šafarić stressed the importance of "maximum focus and readiness" if the team aims to progress.

Šafarić provided an update on the team's preparations and squad status. "Everything went more or less well," he said, noting a knee injury to Sikošek. However, the defender is expected to be fit for the return leg and will be gradually reintroduced to training. Despite minor issues, most players are available and eager to compete. "Everyone is eagerly awaiting the match," the coach stated.

The coach also addressed the situation with goalkeeper Oliver Zelenika. "It has been clearly stated that if Zelenika changes his mind and extends his contract, he will continue to compete for a place in the squad," Šafarić explained. Until then, Silić remains the number one goalkeeper. Šafarić believes there is no need for public speculation, as "the dressing room clearly knows where it stands, and each player's status is known."

Defender Roberto Punčec echoed the team's anticipation for the European competition. "We are looking forward to the encounter and playing in Europe," he said. Punčec described Jablonec as a "very good team, defensively compact and they like to play out from the back."
