Vehicle fire closes A31 as crews battle blaze spreading to heathland

A significant vehicle fire on the A31 in Hampshire has prompted a large-scale response from emergency services, leading to the closure of a major roadway. Firefighters are currently working to contain the blaze, which originated from a vehicle and has spread into adjacent heathland in the New Forest.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service reported that 26 fire engines were deployed to the scene near Ringwood on Sunday evening. The fire initially spread to the central reservation of the A31 before engulfing the nearby heathland. Authorities have closed the A31 in both directions between Picket Post and junction two of the M27, advising motorists to seek alternative routes and avoid the area.

The incident generated a high volume of emergency calls, with the fire service receiving over 160 reports of the initial vehicle fire on the A31 eastbound around 17:20 BST. Crews from Hampshire, Dorset, and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Services are collaborating on the firefighting efforts. The response includes not only fire engines but also four water carriers, six off-road vehicles, and multiple command vehicles to manage the complex operation.
