Vehicle with 1 million kilometres on the clock hits the market

A 2009 Toyota LandCruiser, having clocked an astonishing 1 million kilometers, is set to hit the market, listed for sale by its owner, west Victorian stock agent Gary Driscoll. Driscoll, based in Nhill, has averaged more than 180 kilometers per day over the years, traversing properties across the state in his four-wheel-drive vehicle.

The vehicle will be available through an online auction starting Monday morning and running for two weeks. He anticipates it could sell for over $30,000, emphasizing that the ultimate value rests with the potential buyer.

Remarkably, Driscoll chose not to drive the vehicle the final 300 meters to reach the 1 million kilometer mark on its digital odometer, which currently reads 999,999km. He has decided to offer the privilege of completing this final stretch to the purchaser. "The old girl's now retired as far as I'm concerned and she's got about 300 metres to go to get to the million mark," he said.

Driscoll is unsure how the odometer will behave once it surpasses the 1 million kilometer threshold, speculating that Toyota may not even have a definitive answer. "I'm not sure that Toyota even know because I don't think there's been another 200 series that has done it." He added that Toyota's current understanding is that the odometer might reset to all nines, but this remains unconfirmed.

Horsham Toyota, the dealership where the vehicle has been serviced nearly 100 times, confirmed it is the most traveled car they have ever seen and the first to reach 1 million kilometers, especially with its original engine. While Toyota could not confirm the highest mileage vehicle in Australia, they acknowledged awareness of several customer vehicles exceeding the 1 million kilometer mark. Automotive journalist Toby Hagon described such mileage as "extremely rare," noting that cars reaching 200,000 to 300,000 kilometers are often considered high-mileage. He commented on the difficulty of valuing such a unique vehicle, though LandCruisers are known for retaining their value.
