Vekić causes upset to reach quarterfinals in London

Croatian tennis player Donna Vekić has secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 tournament held at London's Queen's Club. The unseeded Vekić, ranked 76th in the WTA, achieved this by defeating the 28th-ranked Marie Bouzková of the Czech Republic in a second-round match.

The match resumed on Friday after being halted due to rain on Wednesday, with Vekić holding a narrow 6-5 lead in the first set. Bouzková managed to level the score at 6-6, forcing a tie-break. Vekić initially led the tie-break 3-0 and later held four set points at 6-2, but Bouzková fought back. Ultimately, Vekić clinched the first set 11-9 in the tie-break.

In the second set, Vekić immediately broke Bouzková's serve. Although Bouzková had opportunities to break back in the sixth game, Vekić saved two break points. The Croatian player secured another break in the ninth game to close out the match with a 7-6 (9), 6-3 victory.

Vekić is now set to face another Czech opponent in the quarterfinals, Karolína Plíšková, who is ranked 106th in the world.
