Venezuela and IAEA review peaceful uses of nuclear energy

Venezuela and the International Atomic Energy Agency reviewed the country's use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, focusing on building inspections, health care and productive activity.

During working sessions with delegates from the IAEA's Technical Cooperation Division for Latin America and the Caribbean, Venezuelan specialists received instruction in non-destructive testing. The techniques use radiation to detect internal faults in construction elements without altering their original structure.

Science and Technology Minister Yván Gil said the methods assess the integrity, properties and defects of materials without damaging their function or physicochemical characteristics. He described the work as reinforcing the peaceful use of nuclear technology and ionising radiation in the analysis of critical structures.

The discussions also covered scientific training in medicine, biological research and microbiological processing. Officials examined technical supplies for state health centres and regulations governing the safe transport of radioactive substances.

“ We discussed the provision of equipment for the use of atomic energy in our country, especially in the health sector. We agreed on Venezuela's great potential to move radioactive sources safely, with effective automated monitoring,” Gil said. The programme took place within ARCAL, the multilateral partnership that coordinates the IAEA's assistance across the Americas.
