Venezuelan NGO Provea calls for dialogue to focus on citizens' needs

The Venezuelan non-governmental organization Program for Venezuelan Education-Action in Human Rights (Provea) has called for a renewed focus on citizens' needs in the ongoing dialogue between Venezuela's opposition and ruling party. The organization issued a statement emphasizing that any talks, particularly the new process being facilitated by the Trump administration, must prioritize the well-being and rights of Venezuelans.

Provea reiterated its long-standing position that the only path to democratic recovery and the rule of law involves the full restoration and recognition of citizens' rights. Central to this, the NGO stated, is the "full freedom of persons illegitimately deprived of liberty." This highlights the ongoing concern over political prisoners within the country.

The organization stressed that any dialogue process "must be focused on the needs and aspirations of Venezuelans." According to Provea, the primary demands from citizens range from "dignified salaries, freedom for political prisoners, judicial reform, changes in the CNE [National Electoral Council], and free elections." Provea asserts that these issues should be the foundation for any negotiations aimed at achieving a genuine democratic transition.

Provea expressed its support for a peaceful and constitutional resolution to the political conflict. The NGO believes this approach is essential for respecting human dignity and rights. Furthermore, they advocate for strengthening citizen organization, the autonomy of social movements, and rebuilding associative networks as crucial elements for establishing a regime of rights and justice in Venezuela. The upcoming dialogue is set to be led by Dinorah Figuera, who supports the continuity of the 2015 Parliament, and Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly elected in 2020.
