Venezuelan Opposition Leader Asks Supreme Court to Force Election Debate, Denounces "Plan Zapatero"

Opposition leader César Pérez Vivas has formally requested the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) to step in and address Venezuela's institutional crisis. He urged the court's Constitutional Chamber to compel the National Assembly to debate the possibility of a presidential vacancy and subsequently call for elections.

Pérez Vivas, accompanied by jurists Nelson Chitty La Roche and Oscar Arnal, based his petition on Article 5 of the Constitution, which affirms that national sovereignty resides with the Venezuelan people. He stated that if the Assembly fails to act, the TSJ should assume the authority to declare the president's definitive absence and mandate new elections, asserting that the nation's political future rests with its citizens.

Furthermore, Pérez Vivas leveled accusations against Jorge Rodríguez and former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, alleging a "Plan Zapatero" designed to postpone presidential elections until 2030. He outlined a purported schedule involving constitutional reform in 2026, local elections in 2027, regional elections in 2028, legislative elections in 2029, and finally, presidential elections in 2030. Pérez Vivas warned against falling into this "trap," suggesting it aims to prolong the current government's power until favorable international conditions arise for electoral fraud.

He also urged opposition factions to uphold the Panama Agreement and cautioned international bodies, particularly U.S. authorities, to carefully evaluate decisions concerning Venezuela.
