Venezuelan Opposition Parties Back US-Sponsored Dialogue with Maduro Government

Venezuelan opposition parties Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT) and Primero Justicia (PJ) have announced their support for a political dialogue initiative, promoted by the United States, between a commission from the 2015 opposition-controlled National Assembly and the current pro-Maduro parliament. The talks are scheduled to commence on August 1.

The primary objective of this negotiation is to foster a political resolution to Venezuela's ongoing crisis and pave the way for presidential elections that guarantee fairness and democratic principles. Both UNT and PJ stressed the importance of maintaining unity among the diverse opposition factions throughout this process.

UNT specifically endorsed the appointment of Dinorah Figuera and the mixed commission representing the 2015 National Assembly. The party pledged its organizational structure, technical teams, and institutional experience to support the political effort. Primero Justicia echoed this sentiment, characterizing the dialogue as a crucial opportunity to advance toward democracy and endorsing Washington's mediation. The party affirmed its support for opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia, as well as the parties within the Democratic Unity Platform (PUD). They also urged civil society organizations to engage in the accompanying working groups.
