Venezuelan producers denounce alleged extortion and abuses by authorities

Residents and agricultural producers in San Rafael de Onoto, Portuguesa, Venezuela, have voiced strong accusations against authorities, alleging extortion, harassment, and obstruction of their work. In an open town hall meeting, community members detailed a series of alleged abuses, including demands for "vaccines", a term often used for illegal payments, along with detentions, confiscations, and restrictions on moving fuel, machinery, and supplies.

Farmers attending the meeting at the Banco Obrero sector's court presented their grievances to officials from various security forces, including the National Police, state police, the National Guard, and the Integral Defense Operational Zone (Zodi) of Portuguesa, as well as the local mayor. They argued that the actions of these law enforcement bodies create significant obstacles to agricultural production and demanded an investigation into the alleged misconduct.

Johan Rivero, a farmer from Las Majaguas, specifically decried the alleged illegal charges. "We are tired of the vaccines," he stated, questioning the practice of demanding hundreds of dollars from producers. The community's frustration escalated over the weekend following the detention of a producer transporting 600 liters of diesel and a police pursuit that resulted in injuries to two 17-year-old adolescents on a motorcycle.

Videos shared on social media captured the public's anger, with attendees booing an official who attempted to speak at the town hall. The widespread discontent highlights a deep-seated frustration among residents who feel targeted by authorities, leading them to publicly demand accountability and an end to the alleged injustices and extortion.
