Venice Film Festival activists protest low number of women directors

Activists in Venice used fans to protest what they see as the festival’s continuing lack of women directors in competition.

The demonstration took place Saturday outside the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido, where the Venice Film Festival is being held through Sept. 12. Only two of the 21 films in this year’s competition were directed by women.

The protest was organized under the hashtags “#SoloUna” and “#Oneisnotenough.” The festival is described as the world’s oldest film festival and one of the most important international film awards events.
