Veracruz hosts forum on challenges for Mexico's 2027 elections

Electoral officials, specialists, and key stakeholders have convened in Veracruz, Mexico, to address the significant challenges anticipated for the upcoming 2026-2027 concurrent elections. This critical period will see voters choose from over 2,800 public positions across the nation.

The forum, titled "Concurrent Elections 2027: Challenges of the National Electoral System," is a joint initiative by Veracruz's local electoral body (Ople-Veracruz) and the National Electoral Institute (INE). Its primary goal is to foster analysis, dialogue, and the exchange of experiences regarding electoral organization, the integration of technology, institutional sustainability, and inter-institutional coordination.

Over two days, participants will engage in discussions covering essential aspects such as electoral planning and budgeting, procurement of materials, innovation in electoral systems, cybersecurity, and the fiscalization of electoral processes. A key focus will be the evolving role of artificial intelligence in electoral functions and the necessary training and support for electoral personnel.

Marisol Alicia Delgadillo Morales, president of OPLE Veracruz, emphasized the scale of the 2026-2027 elections, which include federal deputies, 17 governorships, local deputies, and municipal council members. She highlighted that effective coordination among national, local, and jurisdictional electoral authorities is indispensable for ensuring successful and trustworthy elections.

The forum seeks to identify operational, technical, and regulatory hurdles while promoting the adoption of best practices. The discussions aim to prepare the electoral system for the complexities presented by new legal and political landscapes, ensuring democratic integrity and citizen confidence.
