Veteran Actress Hou Li-fang Supports Kuo Mei-chu, Exposes Union's Internal Issues

The internal turmoil within the Performers' Union is escalating as veteran actress Hou Li-fang has voiced her support for fellow actress Kuo Mei-chu's sharp criticism of the union's leadership and practices. Kuo had previously accused the union of systemic issues and favoritism towards Chinese artists.

Hou directly challenged the union's effectiveness, stating, "The union has not served performing artists well!" She recounted an incident at a gathering of TV artists where she informed attendees about available subsidy channels. This prompted an on-stage confrontation with former chairman Kang Kai and current chairwoman Tsao Yu-ting, who argued with her despite being in the wrong. Hou revealed that the union's supervisor eventually had to escort them off stage due to their embarrassing behavior.

The two of them went on stage to argue with me, and they were still yelling even though they were in the wrong! I had already investigated clearly, but I just didn't want to name them on stage. Later, their supervisor called them off stage, saying they were too embarrassing!

Beyond past altercations, Hou exposed alleged unfair resource distribution within the union, claiming that performance opportunities are granted based on personal relationships rather than merit. She noted that this favoritism extends beyond regional distinctions, impacting the majority of performing artists. Adding to the controversy, Hou raised serious concerns about the legitimacy of the union's membership, revealing that an investigation is underway to verify if all members are indeed legitimate performing artists.

Hou expressed particular anger regarding the union's handling of membership fees. She pointed out that the union had previously promised to waive fees for members aged 70 and above. However, she stated that this promise has been broken, citing an 80-year-old member who continues to be pressured to pay annual fees, having overpaid for nearly a decade. These revelations have brought the union's internal conflicts to the forefront, drawing significant attention within the entertainment industry.
