Vico C and the enduring “September 5”: The story of the song dedicated to his daughter Marangely

Every September 5, one song returns to a special place among Latin rap listeners. “September 5” transforms the birthday of Vico C’s eldest daughter, Marangely Lozada Trinidad, into a date shared by the artist’s family history and generations of Spanish-speaking listeners across Latin America.

Marangely turns 36 on September 5, 2026. Interest in her returns with the song her father wrote as she entered adolescence. Vico C included the track on En honor a la verdad, his 2003 studio album. Its lyrics captured the passage of time and the growth of a young girl through the line: “Today is September 5 and my daughter turns 13; time flew by, I don’t even remember when she began to become a young woman...”

The song emerged during a difficult period in Vico C’s life. The Puerto Rican rapper, born Luis Armando Lozada Cruz, was arrested in Miami in 2002 for cocaine possession and spent a period in prison. He worked on songs for En honor a la verdad while behind bars, including the track dedicated to Marangely.

The album’s impact extended beyond its public reception. En honor a la verdad won the 2004 Latin Grammy for Best Urban Music Album, strengthening another chapter in Vico C’s career and the presence of Spanish-language rap among major music awards.

Over time, “September 5” developed a life of its own. Social media helped create a digital tradition in which listeners recall the song, share excerpts and calculate the age of the girl mentioned in the lyrics. Marangely, known as Mara, has since built her own path. She studied early childhood education, worked as an art teacher and created Educreativo in Puerto Rico, a venture focused on educational games and teaching tools. She also became a mother of two, a boy and a girl.
