Victor Ponta proposed as prime minister by 'United for Romania' group

The "Uniți pentru România" (United for Romania) parliamentary group has declared its intention to officially propose Victor Ponta for the position of prime minister during upcoming consultations at the Cotroceni Palace. Ponta, who previously held the prime minister role from 2012 to 2015, announced the group's decision on Facebook.

"I am honored and grateful for the trust of my colleagues in the 'United for Romania' Group!" Ponta stated. He expressed conviction that the proposal stems from a desire to offer a "serious solution to the political crisis and the needs of Romanians." Ponta affirmed his willingness to take on executive responsibilities again if requested, emphasizing that the final decision rests with the President of Romania.

The "Uniți pentru România" group, formed in May 2026 and comprising 18 members from various political backgrounds, including former members of SOS România and POT, believes Ponta possesses the necessary experience to navigate the current political and economic landscape. Răzvan Mirel Chiriță, the group's leader, highlighted Ponta's extensive experience at the highest level, his past leadership during challenging periods, and his capacity to unite different political forces.

Chiriță further noted Ponta's strong electoral backing, having been voted for by over 1.3 million citizens in the last election. "Romania needs, now more than ever, professionals with proven results," Chiriță declared, positioning Ponta as a candidate with a deep understanding of public administration and European affairs, capable of delivering tangible outcomes.
