A viral video from Balos Beach in northwestern Crete has turned a celebrated Greek destination into a symbol of overtourism. The footage shows a mass of tourists pressing onto the narrow pier and the famous lagoon.

Balos remains one of Greece’s best-known summer destinations, attracting visitors from around the world. Some reach the beach on foot, while many arrive by boat from nearby Kissamos. The images prompted sharp reactions online, including comments that the scene was “hell” and that Instagram and TikTok had ruined many places.

Other commenters offered a different reading of the crowd. One said tourists were leaving a boat while others waited to board, arguing that the narrow landing area was deliberately kept small so interaction with the natural surroundings would remain minimal.

Overtourism is a serious global problem that mostly harms nature.

Local authorities now plan measures to prevent such large gatherings. A proposed system would require visitors to reserve a date and time slot online in advance. The plan would also limit the number of visitors at each location, with the stated aim of preventing overcrowding from damaging the environment or overwhelming local infrastructure. The system is expected to be implemented ahead of the 2027 summer season.
