Real Madrid's second goal against Inter came from one of the most unusual mistakes of the opening Champions League round. Josep Martínez received a back-pass inside his area, hesitated under pressure from Federico Valverde, and tried to dribble backward. The Uruguayan midfielder quickly poked the ball away with his left foot and scored to make it 2-0.

Real Madrid had already taken the lead in the 14th minute after another error in the Italian side's buildup. Curtis Jones played the ball centrally, Yann Bisseck failed to control it, and Brahim Díaz found Kylian Mbappé, who finished for 1-0.

The goal gave Mbappé 71 in the Champions League, level with Real Madrid icon Raúl. That placed the French forward fifth on the competition's all-time scoring list, behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema.

Martínez reacted angrily to his mistake, retrieving the ball from the net and throwing it forward before trying to hide behind his shirt. He later gave Inter a chance to stay in the match, making a double save before halftime against Mbappé and Jude Bellingham. In the second half, he produced another remarkable stop to deny Bellingham after a Brahim Díaz cross found the English midfielder near an open goal.

Inter eventually reduced the deficit in the 31st minute of the second half. Lautaro Martínez reached the byline and sent a first-time pass back into the area, where Carlos Augusto finished to make it 1-2. The Italian team still had time to chase an equalizer after falling behind because of its own mistakes.
