Video of CFK's birthday greeting for Maradona denied in death trial

A court in San Isidro, Argentina, is hearing testimony in the trial over the death of football legend Diego Maradona. Seven defendants face charges related to his passing.

During a recent hearing, where Vanesa Morla, sister of Maradona's lawyer Matías Morla, was scheduled to testify, Mario Baudry, who represents Maradona's youngest son, requested that a video be played. The video showed former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner greeting Maradona on his 60th birthday.

The recording, made on October 30, 2020, captured the moment before Maradona attended a match for his team, Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata. In the footage, Maradona appeared frail, struggling to walk and speak while being honored by football officials. Kirchner, speaking via speakerphone, expressed her affection and praised Maradona as someone who brought joy and pride to Argentina.

However, the court ultimately denied the request to play the video. The judges determined that the recording was not pertinent to the legal proceedings, which focus on establishing criminal responsibility among the seven accused individuals. The trial continues as it seeks to clarify the circumstances surrounding Maradona's death.
