VIDEO: Okocha receives retro 1998 World Cup Player of Match award

Nigerian football icon Augustine "Jay-Jay" Okocha has been honored with a special retroactive "Superior Player of the Match" award for his memorable performance during Nigeria's 3-2 victory against Spain in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. The award was presented to the 52-year-old legend in a ceremony captured and shared on his Instagram page.

Hello, this is JJ Okocha. I’m about to unveil this special award being given to me by FIFA.

Okocha unveiled a silver trophy from a custom case, expressing his gratitude to Michelob ULTRA and football content platform Copa90 for the recognition. "Special thank you to Michelob ULTRA and Copa90 for this amazing recognition. I’m so honoured to receive it," he stated in the video clip.

This unique award is part of a joint initiative by Michelob ULTRA and Copa90 to retrospectively celebrate standout performances from World Cups prior to the official "Player of the Match" award's inception in 2002. Organizers meticulously reviewed archives to identify deserving players from numerous matches.

It was given to me for winning the Superior Man of the Match in a World Cup game, Nigeria versus Spain 1998.

During the Group D match on June 13, 1998, in Nantes, France, Okocha delivered a masterclass in skill and creativity. Though he did not score, his dazzling dribbling and vision consistently troubled the Spanish defense, which included notable players like Fernando Hierro and Raúl. Nigeria's comeback victory, secured by goals from Mutiu Adepoju, an own goal, and a stunning long-range strike from Sunday Oliseh, allowed the Super Eagles to top their group. Okocha's performance that day further solidified his reputation as one of Africa's most talented footballers and a captivating global entertainer.
