Video shows how the earthquake in Carchi was felt in Imbabura

A security camera in Ecuador's Imbabura province recorded the tremors of an earthquake that occurred early Wednesday morning, August 5, 2026, with its epicenter located in the neighboring Carchi province.

The footage clearly shows the surveillance device shaking violently for several seconds. This movement demonstrates that the earthquake's impact was perceptible outside of Carchi, the province where the seismic event originated.

The earthquake registered a magnitude of 3.9, according to the Geophysics Institute. It occurred at 05:36:59 local time, with its epicenter situated just 3.3 kilometers from San Gabriel, the capital of Carchi. The quake originated at a depth of six kilometers.

While the video provides a visual representation of the shaking in Imbabura, it does not show any superficial material damage to the houses within its field of view. Authorities have confirmed that, as of now, there have been no reports of casualties or significant material damage resulting from the earthquake.
