VIDEO: Tears as slain Lagos NURTW official laid to rest

Mourners gathered in Ketu, Lagos, on Tuesday to bid a tearful farewell to Toba Ajiboye, the Organizing Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), also known as Toba Ijaya. Videos circulating on social media depicted large crowds and emotional scenes as the slain union leader was laid to rest.

The incident happened on Sunday, and one person died. He is a member of the transport union in Lagos. Investigation has commenced, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the killers.

Ajiboye succumbed to gunshot injuries sustained during an attack on his vehicle by unidentified gunmen in the Fadeyi area of Lagos on Sunday evening. The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident and announced that a manhunt for the perpetrators is underway. Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi stated that an investigation has commenced to apprehend those responsible.

He had visited the area on Sunday as he regularly did because that was where he grew up. He was leaving that evening when some gunmen shot at his vehicle. He was rushed to the hospital, and we believed he was responding to treatment until we were informed this morning that he didn’t make it.

Sources close to the incident revealed that Ajiboye had visited Fadeyi, his childhood neighborhood, to see friends before the attack occurred as he was leaving the area. He was rushed to the hospital, but tragically did not survive. The attack also left three other occupants of Ajiboye's vehicle with serious gunshot wounds, who remain hospitalized and in critical condition.

There were about three other people in the vehicle. They also sustained gunshot wounds. Their condition is very serious as we speak. The doctors are battling to save them. We pray that they survive.

Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, the Chairman of the Lagos State NURTW, expressed deep sadness over Ajiboye's death, remembering him as a loyal ally, dependable friend, and committed union leader. The vehicle Ajiboye was traveling in was visibly damaged, with photographs shared online showing numerous bullet holes.

The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable, and committed ally.
