Vietnam labor union congress opens, targets worker welfare and productivity

The 14th Congress of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor commenced in Hanoi, setting a course for the organization's development and worker support initiatives for the 2026-2031 term. The congress, guided by the motto "Unity - Democracy - Discipline - Innovation - Development," brings together 780 delegates representing nearly 10 million union members nationwide.

Discussions are centered around five key themes. The first focuses on the union's role in representing, caring for, and protecting the legal rights and interests of its members. The second addresses the expansion of union membership, the establishment of grassroots unions, improving the quality of union officials, and strengthening the organization's structure while contributing to the Party's development among workers. The third theme involves a comprehensive reform of union finances and the enhancement of member welfare.

Further discussions will cover the modernization of propaganda and outreach efforts, as well as women's affairs within the union. The fifth theme aims to launch emulation movements for "good labor, high productivity, good income" to contribute to achieving double-digit growth targets. The congress also seeks to summarize the achievements of the 13th Congress (2023-2026) and outline objectives for the upcoming term, including potential amendments to the Union Charter.

A significant event during the congress will be the televised and broadcast plenary session on June 4th, where leaders of the Party and State will attend and the 14th Executive Committee of the General Confederation of Labor will be elected. On June 5th, Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng is scheduled to engage in a discussion with delegates on the topic of "Vietnam's unions accompanying the Government in improving labor productivity and achieving double-digit growth targets." The congress will conclude with a closing session and the introduction of the newly elected Executive Committee.
