Vietnam prosecutes case of illegally transporting gold from Laos

Vietnamese border guards have launched a criminal investigation into the illegal smuggling of gold from Laos into Vietnam. The case involves a 47-year-old woman apprehended at the Bo Y International Border Gate in Quang Ngai province with 329.5 grams of gold, valued at over 1 billion Vietnamese dong.

During a routine inspection as she entered Vietnam from Laos, authorities found four gold pieces concealed in her front bag. Preliminary investigations revealed the woman was hired by an unidentified individual named Liễu to transport the gold for a fee of 1.6 million Vietnamese dong. This incident underscores the ongoing efforts by border forces to combat smuggling activities.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Ngoc, Commander of the Bo Y International Border Post, smugglers often exploit favorable policies for cross-border movement of goods and people. He noted that the small size and high value of gold make it a target for sophisticated concealment methods. "Because gold is small in size and high in value, subjects often find ways to hide it cleverly to transport it across the border," Ngoc stated. "The exchange of goods is mainly done through communication tools, limiting direct contact to evade law enforcement."

The Bo Y International Border Post has recently handled two such cases, contributing to enhanced inspection and control operations. These efforts aim to maintain security and order at the border gate and along the frontier.
