Vietnam's Quang Ngai province opens two private ports for offshore fishing

Quang Ngai province in Vietnam has officially recognized two private fishing ports, Sa Ky and Binh Chau, designating them for offshore fishing vessels to dock and for the certification of seafood origin. The announcement was made by the provincial People's Committee, according to Nguyen Dinh Trung, Director of the Quang Ngai Port Management Board.

The designated ports will serve as official points of call for fishing boats operating in offshore waters. Sa Ky port, a Type III facility, can accommodate vessels up to 30 meters long, while Binh Chau, also a Type III port, can handle vessels up to 25 meters. Both ports are now authorized to verify the origin of seafood caught at sea.

This initiative aligns with the requirements of Vietnam's 2017 Fisheries Law. By establishing designated ports and clear procedures for origin verification, Quang Ngai aims to strengthen the management of its fishing fleet, particularly those engaged in offshore activities. The move is intended to improve the traceability of seafood products from catch to market.

Provincial authorities, including the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, will oversee the operations of these ports to ensure compliance with legal regulations. The management organizations of the ports are obligated to operate according to the law and fulfill their duties under the Fisheries Law. This measure is crucial for enhancing the effectiveness of fisheries management and addressing issues related to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, thereby improving the province's standing in international seafood markets.
