Vietnam Seizes Nearly 50 Tons of Contraband Near Border

Vietnamese authorities in Quang Tri province have launched a smuggling case involving nearly 50 tons of illicit goods transported across the border from Laos. The operation, uncovered by the provincial Economic Police, targeted individuals who exploited remote routes to evade detection.

Investigators have identified and arrested Nguyen Dinh Phung, 35, on charges of illegally transporting goods across borders. Phung allegedly led a group that used four trucks to pick up nearly 50 tons of contraband, including metals, old machinery, waste materials, and 8.5 tons of frozen piglet heads, from a location in Laos before attempting to smuggle them into Vietnam.

The group reportedly utilized secluded dirt roads near the A Roong border checkpoint in Huong Phung commune, Quang Tri province, to access Laos. After receiving the cargo, they attempted to re-enter Vietnam via unofficial trails and openings to bypass customs and border control. However, the Quang Tri Economic Police, in coordination with other forces, intercepted the operation.

At the scene, authorities seized over 49 tons of goods. This included the 8.5 tons of frozen piglet heads, 29.7 tons of various metals like aluminum, iron, and copper along with used machinery, and over 10.9 tons of waste. The investigation is ongoing to determine the involvement of other individuals and ensure strict legal action.
