Vietnamese Student Basketball Festival Opens in Hanoi

Vietnam’s first national student basketball festival opened on September 3 at Phenikaa University in Hanoi, giving university players a new organized competition centered on 3x3 basketball.

The event, known as VBAS 2026, is being organized by the Vietnam National Union of Students, the Vietnam Student Assistance and Development Center, Vietnam Basketball Association Joint Stock Company and Grab Vietnam. It features 24 men’s and women’s teams from 15 universities in the Hanoi area.

Participating schools include Vietnam National University, the National Economics University, Hanoi National University of Education and Phenikaa University. Organizers said the tournament could expand to other parts of the country in the future.

Teams compete under the current International Basketball Federation, or FIBA, 3x3 rules. Both the men’s and women’s competitions include a group stage followed by knockout rounds, including the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. The festival runs for two days, September 3 and 4, with total prizes of 10 million Vietnamese dong and gifts from sponsors.

Held under the message “Always Active,” the event aims to promote sport and connect students who share a passion for basketball. Coaches and players from the VBA are also supporting the program, giving students practical training and exposure to a professional basketball environment while promoting discipline and competitive spirit.
