Villavicencio’s daughter questions family’s alleged use of José Serrano’s social media accounts

Tamia Villavicencio has challenged the alleged use of former Ecuadorian Interior Minister José Serrano’s social media accounts by his family while he remains imprisoned.

Her comments followed a statement from Ecuador’s National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Juvenile Offenders, known as SNAI, which denied that Serrano had access to electronic devices at El Encuentro prison. Serrano had claimed that he wrote a letter from the facility in Santa Elena.

Villavicencio, the daughter of murdered politician Fernando Villavicencio, said Serrano’s daughters manage the accounts from the United States. She supported the claim by sharing alleged chat messages between María Paula Christiansen, Serrano’s partner, and Verónica Sarauz, Fernando Villavicencio’s widow.

According to Villavicencio’s account of the messages, Christiansen said Serrano’s daughters had changed the password after she previously had access. The exchange also allegedly described a call from her brother challenging her over the loss of control of the account.

The dispute led Villavicencio to raise a legal question: whether publishing through another person’s account, while presenting the content as if it came from the account holder, could constitute identity impersonation. She said authorities should decide the issue.

Villavicencio also maintained that Serrano’s relatives had used and continued to use the account from the United States. Any legal responsibility connected to the allegation would have to be established through the relevant investigations and proceedings.
