Vinčić, First Slovenian to Referee World Cup Final, Retires

Slavko Vinčić, the 46-year-old Slovenian football referee, has announced his retirement from the sport after a distinguished career. Vinčić officiated the final match of the recent World Cup, hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada, between Spain and Argentina, making him the first Slovenian head referee to officiate a World Cup final.

Vinčić has been an international referee since 2010. His career highlights include officiating numerous significant matches at both World Cups and European Championships. He made his Champions League debut as a referee in 2016 and was promoted to the elite group of European referees in late 2019. He also officiated two group stage matches and served as the fourth official in an Round of 16 match at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

To crown his farewell season, the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) recognized Vinčić as the best referee of the World Cup. He also received the prestigious "Giulio Campanati" award in Italy, as announced by the Football Association of Slovenia.

Vinčić's decision to retire marks the end of an era for Slovenian football officiating. His historic achievement in refereeing the World Cup final solidifies his place in the sport's history.
